Matthew was the son of Hugh Mc­Phail, Sr., and Ma­ry Bir­rell, and hus­band of Ca­tha­rine Kel­ly.

When he di­rect­ed the choir at the First Me­thod­ist Church in Can­ton, Ohio, he be­came a per­son­al friend of Am­er­i­can pre­si­dent Will­iam Mc­Kin­ley, who at­tend­ed there.
