Son of William and Mary McKenzie, both from Scotland, McKenzie entered the Baptist ministry, and held several pastorates until 1873, when he became district secretary for New England of the American Baptist Missionary Union.

William married Elizabeth Stanwood in 1857 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The 1880 census lists him and Elizabeth living with six children in Winchester, Massachusetts. His works include:
