Robert was the son of Methodist minister Robert Stephens McAll and Sarah Whitaker. Originally intending to be an architect, he eventually switched to theology, which he studied at Lancashire Independent College and at Whalley Range College, Manchester. He is remembered as the founder of the Mission Populaire Évangélique de France (Evangelical Popular Mission of France).
