Wilhelmi was the son of Nils Gustav Malmberg and Helena Jaakontytär Huhtala, and husband of Karin Rajander.
He belonged to the synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. He served as an assistant pastor in Kiuruvesi (1879–92), vicar of Paavola (now Siikajoki) (1892–1900), and vicar of Lapua (1900–22).
He was a leader of the Finnish Awakening movement (herännäisyys or körttiläisyys) in the early 20th Century. He was also a representative of the clergy in the pre-independence Diet of Finland, and member of the Finnish parliament from the Finnish Party (1907–18) and the National Coalition Party (1918–20).
His hymn texts appeared in the Finnish Siionin virret and the hymnal of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.
