Macfarlane em­i­grat­ed to Amer­i­ca on Feb­ru­a­ry 11, 1852, on the ship El­len Ma­rie. He set­tled in St. George, Utah, where he was a sur­vey­or, at­tor­ney, judge, com­pos­er, teach­er and farm­er.
