Robert was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Macalister.
A Cambridge University graduate, his passion was archaeology. He contributed to the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, and directed digs for the Palestine Excavation Fund (1900–09 & 1923–24).
He also played the organ and directed the choir at the Adelaide Road Presbyterian Church in Dublin, and served on the committee that revised Scotland’s The Church Hymnody.
