Lowth was educated at Winchester School and New College, Oxford. He served as Professor of Poetry, University of Oxford (1741-1752); Archdeacon of Winchester (1750-1766); Rector of East Woodhay (1753); Prebend of Durham (1755); Bishop of St. David’s (1766); and Bishop of London (1777); dean of the Chapel Royal, and privy councilor. He moved to Oxford in 1766, and to London in 1777. In 1783, he declined an offer to become Archbishop of Canterbury. His works include:
