Son of Henry D. Lowing & Nancy Jane Pierce, Henry was educated at the State Normal School in Edinboro, Penn­syl­van­ia, and the Penn­syl­van­ia Institute for the Blind in Phil­a­del­phia. He began composing music in 1892, and taught the violin and directed church choirs. In 1897, he married Eva Belle Dunbar, who sang alto and accompanied him on piano and organ. As of 1904, he was living in Linesville, Penn­syl­van­ia.
