Lindsay was the son of James Barton Longacre and Eliza Stiles. He married twice, to Arabella Hyland (1904) and Florence Biggart.
He graduated from the Columbia University School of Mines (1892), and Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey (BD 1896).
Ordained a Methodist minister, he pastored in the New York Conference (1896–1910). He then became head of the Department of Old Testament Literature and Religion at the Iliff School of Theology, where he served over three decades.
