A 1935 graduate of Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University), Lemmons became a Church of Christ minister.
He served in Tipton, Oklahoma (1935–43) and at the Central Church of Christ, in Cleburne, Texas (1943–55).
He edited the Firm Foundation in Austin, Texas (1955–83), and the periodicals Action and Image, and was actively involved in overseas missions, especially in Africa.
