Magnus was the son of Hans Landstad, a priest, and Margrethe Elisabeth Schnitler, and husband of Wilhelmine Margrete Marie Lassen.

Landstad was ordained in 1827, and served parishes in Gausdal (1828), Kviteseid (1834), Seljord (1839), Fredrikshald (1848), Borgesyssel (1854), and Sandeherred (1859). He retired in 1877 and moved to Kristiania (Oslo). He is probably best remembered for his work on a hymnal for the Lutheran Church of Norway, Udkast til Kirkesalmebog, known as Landstad’s hymnal (1869). His other works include:
