Introduction

Biography

Ellin was the daugh­ter of Isai­ah Toy and Ma­ry Ann Wal­lace, and wife of Me­tho­dist Epis­co­pal min­is­ter Jo­seph Hughes Knowles.

The 1903 His­to­ry of the New­ark Fe­male Char­i­ta­ble Society said Knowles was from New York Ci­ty when she ad­dressed the So­cie­ty in 1886. It al­so says she was pre­si­dent of the So­cie­ty in 1893.

The 1906 Min­utes of the New­ark Con­fer­ence of the Me­tho­dist Epis­co­pal Church listed Knowles as a min­is­ter’s wi­dow.
