Walter was the son of Eri Kittredge and Lucretia Woods, and husband of Anne Fairfield.

A popular secular musician, Kittredge wrote over 500 songs and ballads, many dealing with the American civil war, including The War Will Soon Be Over, When They Come Marching Home, and Tenting on the Old Campground.
