John was the son of Joseph Walbeck Kissinger and Elizabeth Schott, and husband of Elizabeth M. Wakefield.
He served on the first council of St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Florence, Pennsylvania, when the church was founded in 1873. He was still in New Florence in 1881, according to a dedication in New Sabbath Carols, by R. B. Mahaffey.
He taught music in addition to composing.
