King was educated at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine (BA 1859, AM 1862) and Newton Theological Institution (DD 1877). He was ordained a Baptist minister in 1862, and taught Hebrew at the Newton Theological Institution (1862-63). He served as pastor at the Dudley Street Church, Boston, Massachusetts (1863-82); Emanuel Church, Albany, New York (1882-91); and the First Baptist Church, Providence, Rhode Island (1891-1906).
