Son of Ad­mir­al Kemp­thorne, John was ed­u­cat­ed at St. John’s Coll­ege, Cam­bridge (BA 1796, BD 1807), and sub­se­quent­ly be­came a Fel­low there. Af­ter tak­ing Ho­ly Orders, he be­came Vi­car of North­leach, Glou­ces­ter­shire (1816); Vi­car of Wed­more, So­mer­set­shire (1827); and Rec­tor of St. Ma­ry de Grace, Glou­ces­ter (1827). He was al­so a Pre­ben­da­ry in Lich­field Ca­thed­ral from 1826, and some­time Ex­am­in­ing Chap­lain to the Bi­shop of that di­o­cese. His works in­clude:
