Biography

Elam was the son of El­am Ives Sr., and Sa­rah Hitch­cock. He mar­ried twice, to Lou­isa T. Todd of Ham­den (April 15, 1822), and Lu­cy (sur­name un­known).

In 1830, he moved Phi­la­del­phia, Penn­syl­van­ia, where he found­ed the Phi­la­delphia Mu­sic­al Se­mi­na­ry and taught vio­lin, pia­no­forte, and sing­ing. Six years lat­er, he moved to New York, start­ing ano­ther mu­sic­al school there.

By 1857, he was evi­dent­ly liv­ing with Lu­cy and their daugh­ter El­la in Tren­ton, New Jer­sey.
