Hughes was the son of Hughes McCoy Huffman, Sr., and Mary Viola Rich.
He attended Walter M. Williams High School, Burlington, North Carolina; Wheaton College, Illinois; Northern Baptist Seminary, Oak Brook, Illinois; and Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois.
He served as minister of music at Christ Church, Oak Brook, Illinois (1965–77); First Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, North Carolina; Arcadia Presbyterian Church, Arcadia, California; First Presbyterian Church, Covina, California (1988); La Habra Presbyterian Church, La Habra, California; and Christ Lutheran Church, West Covina, California.
