Howard be­gan his mu­si­cal ca­reer as a cho­ris­ter at the Cha­pel Roy­al un­der Will­iam Croft. He la­ter stu­died un­der Jo­hann Pe­pusch.

He event­u­al­ly be­came or­gan­ist at St. Cle­ment Danes, Strand, and St. Bride’s, Fleet Street, Lon­don. He re­ceived a Doc­tor­ate of Mu­sic de­gree from Cam­bridge Un­i­ver­si­ty in 1769.
