Howard began his musical career as a chor­is­ter at the Cha­pel Roy­al un­der Will­iam Croft. He later studied under Jo­hann Pe­pusch.

He eventually became the organist at St. Cle­ment Danes, Strand, and St. Bride’s, Fleet Street, Lon­don. He received a Doc­tor­ate of Mu­sic degree from Cam­bridge Un­i­ver­si­ty in 1769.
