Charles was the son of Jacob Fries Hott and Jane Streit, brother of George Hott, and husband of Arbelon Clementine Eyler (married 1877, Meyersdale, Maryland).
Hott began preaching in 1869, and was ordained in 1872.
He taught at the Shenandoah Institute, Winchester, Virginia (1879) and pastored in Boonsboro, Maryland, for eight years.
He then moved cross country to serve a United Brethren church in Woodbridge, California.
