Charles’ parents were Jacob Fries Hott and Jane Streit. In 1877, he married Arbelon Clementine Eyler in Meyersdale, Maryland. George Hott was his brother.

Hott began preaching in 1869, and was ordained in 1872. He taught at the Shenandoah Institute, Winchester, Virginia (1879) and pastored in Boonsboro, Maryland, for eight years. He then moved cross country to serve a United Brethren church in Woodbridge, Cal­i­for­nia.
