Brother of hymnist James Holme, Thomas was educated at the Grammar School of Appleby, and obtained orders from the Bishop of Durham in 1816. In 1822, he was appointed Master of the Grammar School of St. John Baptist, Kirkby Ravensworth. In 1822, he became Vicar of East Cowton, a post he held, it seems, the rest of his life.
