Hogan was ed­u­cat­ed at Trin­i­ty Col­lege, Dub­lin (BA 1867, MA 1881). He was ordained a dea­con in 1869, and priest in 1870.

He served as Curate of Tam­laght Fin­la­gan, Der­ry (1869–70); Kill­ow­en, Coun­ty Down (1870–73); Cha­plain of Boyd Church, Bal­ly-Castle (1873); chap­lain to the Earle of Erne and In­cum­bent of Ho­ly Tri­ni­ty, Kin­aw­leyh (1873–82); and Vic­ar of All Saints, Eg­lan­tine, Lis­burn (1883–1915).
