Son of a musician, Hiller attended the University of Leipzig (1754-60), and served as private tutor to Count Brühl. He established the large weekly concerts in Leipzig in 1763, became director of music at the Paulinerkirche in 1779, at the new church in 1784, and Kantor at Sankt Thomaskirche in Leipzig in 1789. He composed a number of sacred and secular vocal and instrumental works, and retired in 1801.
