Son of Thomas Robert Hewitt and Mary Elizabeth Cooke, Wells studied music under Dr. George Bennett at Lincoln Cathedral for 10 years. He served in the Royal Air Force in the First World War I, and in 1928, married Katharine Kitty Markham in Stratford upon Avon.

Hewitt served as assistant organist, Lincoln Cathedral (1922-26); organist at Church of the Holy Trinity, Stratford-upon-Avon (1926-33); organist at St. James’ Cathedral, Toronto, Canada (1933-56); and Chairman of the Toronto Centre of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (1940-42).
