Born: November 4, 1853, Kirtland, Ohio.
Joseph was the son of Samuel Herron and Martha Dunkley.
When he was six years old, his family moved to Carrollton, Missouri, where he lived until his parents’ deaths in 1864.
He then went to live with his married sister in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and Marietta, Ohio.
Herron had a gift for music, and was eventually offered a position as organist at St. Stephen’s College (now Bard College), Annandale, New York. He graduated from St. Stephen’s with a BA in 1876, and from the General Theological Seminary, New York City, in 1879.
He later served an assistant minister in Trinity Parish, New York, and rector of Trinity Church, New Castle, Pennsylvania.
