Biography

Joseph was the son of Sam­uel Her­ron and Mar­tha Dunk­ley.

When he was six years old, his fa­mi­ly moved to Car­roll­ton, Mis­sou­ri, where he lived un­til his par­ents’ deaths in 1864.

He then went to live with his mar­ried sis­ter in New Cas­tle, Penn­syl­van­ia, and Mar­ie­t­ta, Ohio.

Herron had a gift for mu­sic, and was ev­en­tu­al­ly of­fered a po­si­tion as or­gan­ist at St. Ste­phen’s Col­lege (now Bard Col­lege), An­nan­dale, New York. He gra­du­at­ed from St. Ste­phen’s with a BA in 1876, and from the Ge­ne­ral The­o­log­ical Sem­in­ary, New York Ci­ty, in 1879.

He later served an as­sist­ant min­is­ter in Tri­ni­ty Par­ish, New York, and rec­tor of Tri­ni­ty Church, New Cas­tle, Penn­sylvan­ia.
