Herbst stu­died at St. Lo­renz School in Nürn­berg, then read the­ol­o­gy and phi­lo­so­phy at Alt­dorf and Je­na. He be­came Rec­tor of the Gym­na­si­um in Eis­le­ben in 1680, and lat­er pas­tor of St. An­dre­as church there.
