Helmore graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford (BA 1840, MA 1845). He was ordained in the Anglican church and became vice-principal and precentor at St. Mark’s College, Chelsea, where he served 35 years.

In 1846 he was appointed master of the choristers in the Chapel Royal, St. James, where Arthur Sullivan was one of his pupils.
