Son of John Hayes, William was a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral under William Hine, and organist at St. Mary’s, Shrewsbury (1729-31); Worcester Cathedral (1731-34); and Magdalen College, Oxford (1734-77). He received his BMus degree in 1735, and DMus in 1749. He served as Professor of Music from 1741 until his death. His works include:
