Robert was the son of Jacob Hawker and Sarah Smith, grandfather of Robert Stephen Hawker, and husband of Anne Rains.
Hawker was educated for the medical profession, and became an assistant surgeon in the Royal Marines, but took Holy Orders in 1778.
In 1784, he became incumbent of Charles the Martyr Church in Plymouth, where he stayed the rest of his life.
Hawker was well known as a controversial and theological writer.
