Biography

Robert was the son of Ja­cob Hawk­er and Sar­ah Smith, grand­fa­ther of Ro­bert Ste­phen Hawk­er, and hus­band of Anne Rains.

Hawker was edu­cat­ed for the me­di­cal pro­fess­ion, and be­came an as­sist­ant sur­geon in the Roy­al Mar­ines, but took Ho­ly Or­ders in 1778.

In 1784, he be­came in­cum­bent of Charles the Mar­tyr Church in Ply­mouth, where he stayed the rest of his life.

Hawker was well known as a con­tro­ver­si­al and theo­lo­gic­al writ­er.
