In 1819, Harbottle joined the Baptist Church at Tottlebank (where his father was pastor), and shortly afterwards began to preach. In 1822, he went to live with Dr. Steadman, president of the Baptist college at Horton, Yorkshire, and for a time was taught classics in that institution. He subsequently became pastor at Accrington, Lancashire, and in 1841 tutor at a small Baptist college in Accrington. He continued to pastor in Accrington and nearby Oswaldtwistle until his death.
