Stuart was the son of James Henry Hamblen and Alvin Earnest Alvie Williams, and husband of Veeva Ellen Daniels.

He hosted the Cowboy Church of the Air radio show (1938–52). He also acted, appearing in 1939 with Roy Rogers in The Arizona Kid, with Gene Autry in the movie In Old Monterey, and in a 1946 movie serial, King of the Forest Rangers.

In 1952, he ran for American president under the banner of the Prohibition Party. He was inducted into the Country/Western Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970, the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2012.
