Christian was the son of Christian Ludwig Haas and Ann Maria Heinrike Illg, and husband of Rosa Dorothy Nolte.
He attended public schools in Jefferson City, Missouri, and graduated from Elmhurst College, near Chicago, Illinois (1883) and Eden Theological Seminary, Webster Groves, Missouri (1886).
He organized and served at St. James Church, St. Louis, Missouri (1886–1903), and was pastor of St. Paul’s Church, Buffalo, New York (1903–28).
