If D. P. is a misprint for P. D., we speculate this author may be Phineas Densmore Gurley (1816–1868).

Phineas Gurley was Chaplain of the United States Senate and was pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, Washington, DC, as of 1865.

American president Abraham Lincoln regularly attended Gurley’s church. Gurley was at Lincoln’s death bed after his assassination, and delivered the eulogy at Lincoln’s funeral.
