Biography

Sid was the hus­band of Myr­na Lou­ise Wheel­er (mar­ried 1956).

He emi­grat­ed to Am­er­ica at age 14.

Though a high school drop­out, he gra­du­at­ed from As­bury Col­lege (now As­bu­ry Uni­ver­si­ty), Wil­more, Ken­tuc­ky (lat­er re­ceiv­ing an Out­stand­ing Alum­ni Aw­ard); Van­der­bilt Uni­ver­si­ty, Nash­ville, Ten­nes­see (mas­ter’s de­gree); and Pur­due Uni­ver­si­ty, West La­fay­ette, In­di­ana (PhD).

After gra­du­a­tion from As­bu­ry, Guill­én taught Span­ish at Fern Creek High School in Lou­is­ville, Ken­tuc­ky, and at Ken­tuc­ky Sou­thern Col­lege (merged with the Uni­ver­si­ty of Lou­is­ville in 1969).

In 1969, Guill­én joined the fa­cul­ty of An­der­son Col­lege (now An­der­son Uni­ver­si­ty), In­di­ana, as a Pro­fess­or of Span­ish. He taught there, and served as chair­man of the For­eign Lang­uage De­part­ment, re­tir­ing in 1995.

In 1979, Guill­én won a Lil­ly Fel­low­ship. In 1987, he was chief trans­lat­or and di­rect­ed Lang­uage Ser­vic­es for the Pan Am­er­ican Games in In­di­an­apo­lis, In­di­ana.

He was a mem­ber of the U.S. Ar­my Re­serves for 12 years, and tra­veled ex­tens­iv­ely around the world.

He and his fa­mi­ly at­tend­ed the East Side Church of God in An­der­son for 40 years, where he taught Sun­day school and served on the church board.
