Edward was the son of Jonathan Grubb and Elizabeth Burlingham, and husband of Emma Maria Horsnaill.

He attended a Friends (Quaker) school, Leeds University, and the University of London. He edited The British Friend (1901–13), and was secretary of the Howard Association. His works include:
