Grey was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge (MA 1834), and was ordained an Anglican deacon at Rochester in 1836, and priest in 1837. He served as Curate of Acton, Suffolk (1836) and Sapcote, Leicestershire (1837); Perpetual Curate of Buxton, Derbyshire (1837-42); Rector of Morpeth and Perpetual Curate of Ulgham, Northumberland (1842-90); Honorary Canon of Durham (1863-82); Rural Dean of Morpeth (1879-90); Proctor for Archdeacon of Lindisfarne; and Honorary Canon and Chaplain to the Bishop of Newcastle (1882-90).
