John was the son of William Greenwood and Elizabeth Willans, and husband of Helen Rebecca Blackburn. Educated at Huddersfield College, Greenwood was a merchant shipper of cotton yarn to the continental markets. His many hymns, were written chiefly for Sunday-school anniversary services, and other special occasions. His works include:
