Greatorex got his ear­ly mu­sic­al train­ing from his fa­ther, Thom­as Great­or­ex, or­gan­ist at West­min­ster Ab­bey. Hen­ry em­i­grat­ed to Amer­i­ca in 1839, and played the or­gan at Cen­ter Church and St. John’s Church in Hart­ford, Con­nec­ti­cut; St. Paul’s Church and Cal­va­ry Pro­test­ant Epis­co­pal Church, New York Ci­ty; and (from 1853) in Charles­ton, South Car­o­li­na. His wife was ar­tist Eli­za Pratt Great­or­ex (1819-1897). Hen­ry’s works in­clude:
