Samuel was the son of Samuel Greg and Hannah Lightbody.
He was educated by Dr. Lant Carpenter in Bristol, and at Edinburgh University. He owned the Lowerhouse Mill in Bollington, Cheshire, near Macclesfield.
Addresses he gave at services conducted for his workers were published posthumously in 1877, and also as Short Sermons from a Layman’s Legacy (London: Philip Green, 1895).
