Greenwood studied under Stopforth, organist of Halifax parish church. He became the organist at Keighley at age 16, and at Leeds parish church in 1821.
After almost six years at Leeds, he visited France, London and America, staying in each country about two years. He eventually settled in Halifax, and served as organist at the South Parade Methodist Church until 1835.
