Greenwood stu­died un­der Stop­forth, or­gan­ist of Hal­i­fax par­ish church, and be­came or­gan­ist at Keighley at age 16, and at Leeds par­ish church in 1821.

After al­most six years at Leeds, he vis­it­ed France, Lond­on and Am­er­i­ca, re­main­ing in each coun­try about two years. He event­u­al­ly set­tled in Hal­i­fax, and served as or­gan­ist at the South Pa­rade Me­thod­ist Church un­til 1835.
