An ironmonger by trade, Grant worked in West Bow, Edinburgh. From 1746–52 he held several offices in the Edinburgh Town Council. To the Edinburgh Orphan Hospital he donated the profits from the first & second editions of his hymns, which were published as:

  1. Infinite Wisdom, Power and Grace
  2. O Thou That Hearest Prayer
  3. O Zion, Afflicted with Wave upon Wave
  4. Savior, Whose Mercy Severe in Its Kindness
