Gordon’s father was grieve, or overseer, of the estate of Pitodrie in Oyne Parish, Aberdeenshire. George emigrated to America with his sister in 1871. He was educated at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and became pastor of the Old South Church, Boylston Street, Boston, Massachusetts, in 1884. He was a lecturer in the Lowell Institute Course (1900); Lyman Beecher Lecturer, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (1901) university preacher to Harvard (1886–90); to Yale (1888–1901); and Harvard overseer.
