Biography

George was the son of the grieve, or ov­er­se­er, of the es­tate of Pi­to­drie in Oyne Par­ish, Ab­er­deen­shire, and hus­band of Su­san Hunt­ing­ton Man­ning.

He emi­grat­ed to Am­er­ica with his sis­ter in 1871.

He was edu­cat­ed at Har­vard Uni­ver­si­ty, Cam­bridge, Mas­sa­chu­setts, and be­came pas­tor of the Old South Church, Boyls­ton Street, Bos­ton, Mas­sa­chu­setts, in 1884.

He was a lec­tur­er in the Low­ell In­sti­tute Course (1900); Ly­man Beech­er Lec­tur­er, Yale Uni­ver­si­ty, New Ha­ven, Con­nec­ti­cut (1901). He al­so served as uni­ver­si­ty preach­er to Har­vard (1886–90) and Yale (1888–1901), and was a Har­vard ov­er­se­er.
