Son of the Curate at Hawley, Gillett was educated at Westminster School and Keble College, Oxford (BA 1896). He was ordained a deacon in 1898, and priest in 1899, and held curacies in London and Brighton. While domestic chaplain to Earl Beauchamp at Madresfield, he contributed three translations and a hymn to the 1906 English Hymnal. He spent time in South Africa (1913-25), was an editor for the Society for Propagation of the Gospel (1926-33), and served as chaplain to the Community of St. Peter in St. Leonard’s on the Sea.
