Gaul be­came a chor­is­ter in Nor­wich Ca­thed­ral at age nine, and went on to play the or­gan at St. John’s, La­dy Wood, Birm­ing­ham, and St. Au­gus­tine’s, Edg­bas­ton. He earned a MusB de­gree from Cam­bridge Un­i­ver­si­ty in 1863, be­came con­duct­or of the Wal­sall Phil­har­mon­ic So­ci­e­ty in 1887, and taught har­mo­ny and coun­ter­point at the Birm­ing­ham and Mid­land In­sti­tute and else­where. He is re­mem­bered as a com­pos­er of or­a­to­ri­os, can­ta­tas, hymn tunes, chants, part songs, and pi­a­no­for­te piec­es. His works in­clude:
