Henry was the son of Francis Levin Fries and Lisetta Maria Vogler, and husband of Rosa Elvira Mickey (married 1891).
He served as president of the Winston-Salem Southbound Railroad, and as superintendent of the East Salem (now Fries Memorial Moravian) Sunday School for 40 years.
He also served a term in the state legislature; three terms as mayor of Salem, North Carolina; was a founder of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), Raleigh; and was one of its trustees for a decade.
