Henry was the son of Henry Wilder Foote I and Frances Anne Eliot, and husband of Eleanor Tyson Cope (married June 22, 1903, Germantown, Pennsylvania).
He was educated at the Roxbury Latin School, a private school, and Harvard University (AB 1897, AM 1900, STB 1902).
He entered the Unitarian ministry and served churches in New Orleans, Louisiana; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Belmont, Massachusetts; and Charlottesville, Virginia.
From 1914–1924 he was an assistant professor at the Harvard Divinity School, where he gave a course on the history of Christian hymnody.
