Biography

Eliza was the daugh­ter of Sam­uel and Sa­rah Bar­rett, and wife of Karl (Charles) Theo­dor Chris­tian Foll­en (mar­ried 1828).

Her hus­band was a Ger­man po­et who moved to Am­er­ica in 1824, and at one time taught his­to­ry at Harvard Uni­ver­si­ty. He died on the steam­er Lex­ing­ton, which burned and sank in Long Is­land Sound, Jan­ua­ry 13, 1840.

In her ear­ly life, Eli­za con­trib­ut­ed va­ri­ous piec­es of prose and po­et­ry to news­pa­pers and ma­ga­zines. She ed­it­ed The Child’s Friend for sev­er­al years.
