Henry’s parents were Peter Flickinger (1798-1881) and Margaret Ritter Flickinger (1804-1870). He married twice, to Anna Margaret Caldwell Flickinger (1841-1910), and Martha Milligan Flickinger (1846-1886).

During the American civil war, he served in Company F, 104th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and Company D, Stewart’s Battalion, Pennsylvania Independent Infantry.
